Hotel Aguas Claras
Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica
Everything is Irie here.
Hotel Aguas Claras in Puerto Viejo is a beautifully curated collection of Victorian-tropical bungalows and suites, discreetly tucked within 2 acres of lush gardens and just steps from golden sands, clear water and thriving coral reefs. The hotel is the life work of a Costa Rican artist and her daughter and celebrates the laid-back vibe, vibrant nature and Afro-Caribbean and Indigenous cultures that characterize Costa Rica's southern Caribbean.
No boring rice and beans here! Papaya and Da Lime restaurant highlight typical Caribbean flavors and dishes not found anywhere else in Costa Rica. Try the Rondón or Plantintá.
The bungalows are built in the style of the Victorian plantation homes typical the region, but are created of completely up-cycled or repurposed materials and feature original artworks from artists throughout Central America. Choose between one or two bedroom options, or the 5-bedroom Casa Floralia, a two-story Caribbean home ideal for a family or group of friends.
Cahuita National Park gets all of the attention but for even less human encounters, head to Refugio Nacionale Mixto de Vida Silvestre Gandoca-Manzanillo. Just down the road from the hotel and bordering the ocean, the reserve is a wonderful place to be alone in nature.
Join the hotel's naturalist guide for an early morning botany walk through our extensive tropical gardens. In addition to learning about the vivid and unique fauna, you're likely to see sloths, frogs, lizards and a variety of birds, including the endemic and endangered Great Green Macaw.
